March 23, 2010

Dear Friend:

The Economic Opportunity Council (EOC) is a private non-profit agency which provides a range of services to low-income San Franciscans.  As the Community Action Agency for the City and County of San Francisco, EOC’s mission is to address the problem of poverty in San Francisco by focusing of resources toward eliminating the causes and conditions and impacts of poverty. The role of our board members is vital to the success of the agency.  Board members are charged with the responsibility of policy development; oversight of the programs both in the areas of monitoring and evaluation; fund development and board level oversight of the agency’s administration.  Board members do not participate in the day to day operation of the programs.

As the Community Action Agency, EOC must conform to federal legislation which calls for a tri-partite board of directors.  All Community Action Agencies must have representatives of the private sector, along with elected public officials and low income sector  representatives on the board of directors.  We are currently seeking two (2) qualified applicants to represent the private sector.

The minimum qualifications for private sector candidates are: 1)  All representatives of private groups and interests must be selected by the organization designate for representation on the board of directors and must be empowered to speak and act on behalf of the organization which he/she represents in connection with the business of the board of directors.   Representatives of private groups and interests may have alternates to substitute for them.  The organizations represented on the board of directors shall select their own alternates.  Board Members may have only one (1) alternate.  Each alternate must serve for only one (1) board member. All candidates must be eighteen years of age or older when applying or nominated.  If your group would like to apply to become members of the EOC board of Directors, all candidates must submit an application for consideration for membership, along with the resume of your designated representative and alternate to Mr. Dennis Yee, EOC Interim Executive Director at our central office – 1426 Fillmore St., Suite 301, San Francisco, CA 94115.

A candidate should understand that the basic time commitment involves a bi-monthly meeting of the full board as well as monthly committee meetings.  Also, the agency has held two or three day retreats for board members in the past.  There is no remuneration for board membership.

Any nominations for private sector representatives on the EOC board of directors must be received in our offices by the close of business, 5:00 pm, Friday April 9th, 2010.

For more information, please contact me at (415) 749-5600.

Sincerely,

/Darnisha Wright/
Executive Operations Officer
